Enhancing cross-border railway operations between Malaysia and Laos is one of the objectives of the Memorandum of Collaboration inked between Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and Lao National Railway State Enterprise (LNRE) in Laos on 27 June 2023.
The memorandum was signed by KTMB’s Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin and Daochinda Siharath, Director General of LNRE. Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sonexay Siphandone, the Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic were also present to witness the signing ceremony.
The newly established railway line has successfully connected the ASEAN railway network to wider rail corridors along the Trans-Asian Railway Network,opening new possibilities for international rail travel. It is also aligned with the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) platform’s framework, which forms an important part of the BRI’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
It is hoped that this collaboration with other counterpart in ASEAN will further enhance KTMB’s position as the regional logistics player.
